I have always been a big car person. When growing up there seemed to always be a copy of
Autoweek laying around the house that I could pick up and
read through. Since I was the youngest child I got to see my brother get his first car and my dad help him
restore that car along the way. My brothers first car was a 1965 Ford Mustang coupe with a 289 and a C4 automatic.
Over the years that car was rewired countless times, had its interior redone more than once, and was repainted
twice that I know of. As one can imagine my dad was a little burnt out with working on cars by the time I was old
enough to drive.
My first car was very short lived, it was a 1983 S10 4x4 Blazer. My Blazer had constant transmission problems, not
even sure how many rebuilds it went through. There were times it was being driven to us from the shop that "fixed" it
and they would call and say it broke down on them and they would have to keep it longer. That blazer had a small V6
motor in it with a automatic transmission, it was so slow that you would have to turn off the AC just to pull onto the
freeway. The only good thing about the Blazer was the stereo systems that I installed into it, too bad they would
always end up getting stolen. In the fall of 1991 I made a deal with my dad that if I got good grades in school he would
buy me a new car. The first car I tried for was a older Mustang or Camaro since the 1967 Camaro was the car I always
dreamt of having. My dad however did not want to buy another old car and relive the memories caused by my brother's 1965
Mustang. So my next choice was a 1992 Mustang LX 5.0. The reason I picked a LX 5.0 is because for just over $13k you got
a car with a V8(no more power problems), a 5-speed(hopefully no more transmission problems), AC, power locks/windows(Blazer
had manual ones). It was never my intent to race that Mustang, however I went to school with people that did and got hooked
in just a couple of months and the modifications started then and are still going to this day, 09/06/2010.
In 1993 I bought a 1967 Mustang Coupe from a friend's brother for about $400. This car was sitting in a foot or so of mud
when I bought it and we had to pull it out with a tractor. The reason I bought this car is because I wanted to
build up a hot rod and race it at the dragstrip. This car already had a 351C in it along with a C6 and it had been
used many years back as a street racer. After many afternoons after school and many weekends we finally got the car
running. It needed its lower intake put back on and I was given a 650 Holley double pumper with 700 jets in it when I
bought the car. The cost to get it running was not much, just little things like a battery, fluids, misc brake parts(the front
passenger brake was locked), mufflers, and had to get a driveshaft shortened for it. The car was never all that fast, but
it was a good learning experience. Shortly after getting it running we moved to Tupelo, MS and while there I redid all of
the under dash wiring on the car, had the rust cut out and new body panels welded in, and then my dad and I repainted the car.
The car was repainted a ultra violet pearl and soon after that nicknamed Barney. About this time I started college so the 1967 stayed in
MS and I continued to drive the 1992 daily. About two years later I moved to College Station and upon doing so I borrowed
my friends 1982 3/4 ton truck to drive to MS in and trailer my 1967 back, I think that Mustang ran better than the truck.
While in College Station the Mustang bent a pushrod and munched a lifter so I pulled the heads and installed new lifters and
had the heads gone freshened. About after a year I decided it was time to sell the 1967 so I could get a truck since my 1992 was
turning more and more into a race car. I sold the 1967 to my friend, the very one who I bought the car through originally. The
deal was for his 1982 3/4 ton truck, the one I used to go to MS in, a little bit of cash, a used stock 5.0 motor(shortblock in the
Mustang needed replacing due to eating oil), and a used 350 motor(one in the truck ate oil). The truck then sat in my
garage since it needed some major work before it could be driven. I did not get the truck drivable until I blew both head
gaskets, clutch, and a coolant hose in the 92 while trying to race it at the dragstrip with a newly installed supercharger.
The 1992 sat for some time after that until I finally put the used 5.0 shortblock in it along with new heads/intakes that I bought.
Then a couple of weeks after that my brother blew up the motor in my truck.
My 3/4 ton truck sat with the blown motor in it for a number of years. When I moved back to Houston, I had the
truck towed to my brother's where the plan was to put a new motor in it. The used motor I had for the truck turned out
to have a bad piston, so I then set out to rebuild that motor. Turned out the block was also cracked, but 350 blocks
are easy to come by. I ran out of time to work on the truck and had it towed to a friends shop where I paid him to
finish it. When it was all said in done, I had a new motor, all new AC(it had none before), all new exhaust(had
warped headers so went to new headers), and a whole mess of other new parts. The motor was bored 60 over, had early
truck heads on it, flat top pistons, RV cam, high ratio rockers, Elebrock intake, full MSD ignition(6A, Blaster 2 coil, and
MSD distributer), and a 650 cfm Elebrock Carb. Needless to say that truck ran real good even if it looked like a piece
of junk.
Early in 1999 I decided to get a new vehicle. The 3/4 ton had some braking problems that I was unable to figure out
and did not have the time to apply to anymore, plus it was running rough. So I purchased a new 1999 Mercury Mountaineer with the towing
package and the V8. I kept both vehicles for awhile until the person I bought the 3/4 ton from needed a vehicle so he bought
the truck back from me. He got lucky and told someone about the braking problems and it turned out to have a bad brake line
on the front drivers side. He also found that it needed all new ignition wires since several of them were not
functioning at all. The Mountaineer I kept for until the summer of 2000 when I then sold it after ordering a new Audi S4.
Upon selling the Moutaineer I started to drive my mom's old Porsche 928 since
no one else was using it at the time. I ordered a green S4 and it took 7 months to arrive instead of 3 and the reason for ordering
was because both dealers told me that no green ones were in the states or had ever been even though it was a
offered color. Once the S4 finally came in, I decided that I did not want a car note and have continued to drive
the 928 and slowly fix things on it.
Presently I am considering selling my 1992 Mustang, however since it does not run currently I fear it would be
hard to sell and it would not sell for much. The next car I plan to build up will be a 1967 Fastback Mustang assuming
I can find a good deal on one.
